The Cocker Spaniel :” The Adaptable Hunting Dog”

The Cocker Spaniel History dates back to the fourteenth century. They hold their origin to the English Cocker Spaniel which was got to the U S. They were bred and made small in size and then named American Cocker Spaniel. The Cocker Spaniel is a dog used for hunting who can adapt itself to work in both water as well as land. It is very good at flushing and bringing back the kills by holding it gently in the mouth. They follow commands well. It has got he name “Cocker” from a type of bird that the dog used to flush. 

The American Cocker Spaniels characteristics include hunting, tracking and retrieving kills, working as watchdog, liveliness and obedient. The Cocker Spaniel is a dog which is mid sized dog which is well-built dog. It has a rounded head and the teeth meet like a bite of scissor. It has dark eyeballs and eye rims that are round and slightly shaped like almonds. The ears are long and feathered and the tail usually docked. The hair of the Cocker Spaniel is not very long on the body and short and smooth on the head. The abdomen, ears, chest and legs is feathered. The color of the coat is any solid color. The coat is silky flat and a bit wavy. 

The Cocker is daring and very eager to work. The Cocker Spaniel does their work both as a gundog and as a pet of the house efficiently. They are very joyful, gentle full of life, playful, loyal and lovable. Cocker Spaniel Training is easy as they are not very intelligent and follow the instructions given by the master very well. The Cocker Spaniel puppies are very amusing, dependable and delightful and are always wagging their tail and need rigid, gentle leadership and exercise daily to keep fit and happy. They are easy to train and get along with other pets, children and elderly in the house very well. 

Some major Cocker Spaniels health problems include cataracts, patellar luxation and glaucoma. Other minor problems which they have are hip dysplasia, entropion, PRA, allergies, ectropion, lip fold pyoderma, seborrhea, liver disease, otitis externa HF, phosphofructokinase deficiency, urolithiasis, and cardiomyopathy. They may also have problems of gas and dysphasia of the elbow occasionally. They may also be affected by a disease which is life taking and very fatal. It is a silent killer which acts very fast. 

 The cockers Spaniel adoption is a good choice for people who live in apartments as they are quite active in side the house. They are not the type of dog who would stay by themselves outside the house or its kennel.. Grooming them is also not tough as the cocker is known to be an average shedder. The Cockers need their hair to be trimmed regularly and when brushing the hair it should be done gently to avoid pulling off the soft hair.  

Other Cocker Spaniel information includes they have ample of energy and require to be exercised regularly.  They also need to be  taken for long walks daily. The Cocker may give birth to an average of five puppies at a time. The number of years the Cocker may live is around 15 years. The height of the Cocker male dog is about 15 ½ inches and bitches are about 14 ½ inches tall and they may weigh about 15-30 pounds. Lastly the Cockers tend to tear so under the eyes should be wiped often.
