According to the Basset Hound history it is an ancient breed and the descent of the Bloodhound. There are any people who think that the Basset Hound holds its origin to the inherent dogs like dwarfs born as puppies of various kinds dogs used for hunting. The name “Basset Hound” has be taken from a French word “bas” which means low or near to the ground. The Basset hounds are able to hunt alone as well as in packs. They are usually used for hunting fox, opossum, hare and pheasants. The dog can smell things excellently though its reactions to thing are slow. As the Basset hounds are slow, they are of great help to hunters walking and also they do not scare the kill before hand.
The Basset Hound characteristics are they are short and somewhat heavy dog. They have a large head which is in proportion with the round head. The have brown eyes with a soft and sad look and are a little sunken. They have dewlaps that are very prominent and lips which are pigmented. The skin falls like fold on the head and is loose like elastic. They have long ears which are like velvet and the chest is also very deep. The color of the coat is usually in varied combinations. The Basset Hound is very sweet, calm, dedicated, nonviolent and well-mannered. They are good to be kept as pets in homes. They are gentle but not shy and very loving with the owner and warm with the children
The Basset hound dog health problems include bloating. They should not be overfed as by doing this pressure on the legs as well as the spine becomes great which in turn leads to lameness and ultimately paralysis because of their short legs and long heavy body.
The Basset hound adoption can be done by people who live in apartments. They are not much active in the house but if given a chance they enjoy running and playing for hours outdoors. The Basset hound need to be taken for long walks every day.
Other Basset Hound information includes the height of the male Basset Hound dogs is about 12-15 inches while the females may be as high as 11-14 inches. The male hound weighs about 50-65 pounds while the females weigh about 45-60 pounds. The number of years they may live is about ten to twelve years. The Basset Hound puppies are large when born and are born at an average of 8 at a time. The Basset Hound have silky, coat which has hair that is short and it is not difficult to groom. It just needs to be combed and brushed with a stiff coat brush and shampooed when very essential. The ears need to be wiped once a week and toenails trimmed on a regular basis.
The Basset Hound training if done properly can make the dogs very obedient. The trainer needs to be firm, confident and constant when giving instructions. They also need constructive support and patience when being trained. The Basset Hound have very intense sense of smell so they tend to go in search of the place from where they pick up the smell and many times do not hear when being called as they are very engrossed in the smell.
