According to the Brittany dog history this dog was named after a region of France known as Brittany. The origin of their birth is not clear but speculations are such that they are the result of cross breeding between the some not known breeds of French dog. As they look similar to a kind of spaniel others think they may be in some way linked. The Brittany is well known as a dog that is very good at bird hunting.
The Brittany characteristics include it is an enthusiastic medium-sized dog. They have long legs. Its head is round and medium in size. The nose and the eyes come in different colors and it depends upon the color of the coat. They have nostrils which are wide. It has ears that are triangular and which lie flat and near the head. They have small feet and the tail is usually docked up to 4inches. It has a single coat that is lightly feathered, dense wavy or flat but not curly. The Brittany comes in different colors.
The Brittany dog training should be done by a person who is firm but calm and confident and constant in his teaching methods and who sets rules and sticks to them. They are very bright; handling them is easy and can be trained for hunting. They can adapt themselves to any different kinds of environment may it be plains, woods or hills. The Brittany is particularly used for hunting hare, wood cock and partridges. They have an exceptional instinct for getting back kills from the water.
The Brittany puppies should be socialized properly. If it has seen the children since childhood it adjusts very well with them. They are loving, kind, obedient, happy, independent, affectionate, alert and always ready to make the owner happy.
Other Brittany information includes the height of the male Brittany is 17-21 inches and that of bitches is 18-20 inches. The male Brittany may weigh around 35-40 pounds while the females may weigh about 30 – 40 pounds. The numbers of years a Brittany may live is about ten to twelve years and they give birth to an average of 6 puppies at a time. The Brittany’s are like by almost all the hunters due to their size which enables the hunters to carry them where ever they go easily. It is also very much appreciated due to its jovial nature as a dog that is used for company.
The Brittany dog health problems include they are prone to seizures and hip dysplasia.
The Brittany adoption is not for people who are not active as Brittany needs lots of exercise and activities as they have great resistance power and are full of energy. Daily walks and jogs are a must for them. They are not suitable for being kept in apartments as they are very energetic at home. The Brittany’s are not comfortable in cold and damp environment.
Grooming a Brittany is not tough as all it needs is the flat coat be brushed regularly. They should be given bath or shampooed only when very essential. Maintaining them does not require much money but trimming needs to be done at times. The Brittany is a light shedder.
