According to the history of the Bullmastiff they were got by interbreeding sixty percent Mastiffs with forty percent of the Bulldogs in England. There are records of the Mastiff Bulldog breed which dates back to 1795. The Bullmastiff tracked down and took care of and kept back poachers. The longevity of the Bullmastiff is less than 10 years. It gives birth to an average of 8 puppies at a time. The Bullmastiff has short-hair and a little rough coat which is not difficult to groom. It should be combed and brushed with a stiff hair brush and shampooed only when very essential. The nails need to be trimmed regularly. it is a dedicated, vigilant guard dog, who is very affectionate fearless and of a good nature. They are very tolerant to children as well as intelligent, calm and loyal. Bullmastiffs should be taken for walks daily.

Bullmastiff training is required to be done by a person who is very firm and certain and constant with the training he sets upon the dog as they are extremely powerful. The dog should be taught to mix and adjust properly with other pets of the house as well as humans and dogs from a very early age.

The Bullmastiff Puppies are not very coordinated. They are especially receptive to the voice tone so they should not be spoken to harshly but with a voice that is assertive. The bullmastiff is an easy dog to handle. They do not like to be left isolated so should not be kept in kennels. Bullmastiffs are not dogs to be kept in apartments but can do fine if made to exercise regularly and sufficiently. The Bullmastiffs are extremely susceptible to temperatures and cannot bear extremely hot or cold weather.

The Bullmastiff health problems include they are prone to cancer, the lips get boils, tumors, hip dysplasia, problems that relate to the eyelid problems and. They also get bloated easily so they should be fed two three small meals in a day rather than one big meal. As they have the tendency to gain weight easily they should not be over fed.
