The Shar Pei – “The Yuppy Puppy breed”

According to the Shar-Pei history the ancestors of this breed is doubtful. There are pictures of this dog on pottery which suggest that the breed existed around 206 B.C. The meaning of “Shar –Pei” in Chinese is coat that’s sandy .They were used for hunting, tracking, to guard the house and people. Herding and protecting stock. They were also used for dog fights as because of their extremely prickly coat and loose skin they could not be grabbed by other dogs. The Chinese also believed that they could scare off any sort of evil spirits.

 The Chinese Shar-Pei characteristics include it is a huge dog which has skin that is wrinkled. It has a broad  head and a square profile They have blue-black tongue which is just like that of a  Chow  Chow dog. The teeth meet like the bite of a scissor. They have small triangular ears and a thick tail. They have small, sunken dark eyes which are shaped like almonds. 

More wrinkles are seen in the Chinese Shar-Pei puppies  than the adults. As the Shar-Pei gradually becomes older the wrinkles become less. The Chinese Shar-Pei has three coat varieties:

Other Shar-Pei information includes they are very intelligent, mischievous, energetic, courageous, dominant and very faithful to their owner if the Shar-Pei has been introduced to cats and children since it was very young then they shall have no problem adjusting with them. The Shar Pei makes very good escorts and watchdogs. The  Shar-Pei is about 18 – 20 inches tall and they weigh about 40 – 45 pounds. The longevity of the Shar Pei is about 10 years. 

The Chinese Shar-Pei training needs to be done by a confident person. The trainer should not be inconsistent, uncertain, very soft or gentle. The Shar-Pei requires a trainer who is firm, but gentle and very consistent in his training method. This breed needs to be taught obedience firmly. 

The Shar-Pei health problems include they can have failure of kidney which causes fever. They have hereditary skin problem. They are also very sensitive to heat so should be kept in cool places and given enough of water to drink.

The Chinese Shar-Pei adoption is suitable for people who live in apartments as they can adapt themselves easily to apartment life if they are given enough exercise The Shar-Pei is somewhat active in the house and do not need a yard for play or activity. The Chinese Shar-Pei requires a lot of exercise so they should be taken for walks daily.

Grooming a Shar-Pei requires it be brushed regularly. They do not need to be trimmed. It should be given bath weekly and brushed daily. They are not suitable for homes where people suffer from any sort of allergy as these dogs have coat which is very rough which many times create problems.

Shar-Pei is normally does not like water so preferably stay away from it. Many Shar-Pei have a tendency to drool, particularly when hurt it should only be bought from a well known breeder. Being a well-known breed during the 80’s they were also called the breed that was bred carelessly.
