According to the English Mastiff history it is an ancient breed and has its base in Great Britain. They have also been described and seen in monuments of Egypt which had ben made around three thousand BC. There is a belief that during Caesars’ rule they were made to fight with lions, bulls, bears as well as humans in combat. At a later stage they were used as bodyguard, protector from dangerous predators and wolves as well as a dog which served like a companion
The Old English Mastiff characteristics include it is an enormous dog with a large square head. The Mastiff has a huge, weighty head like a square.The eyes are medium-sized and the color of the eye is shades of brown. It has a dark colored nose. The ears are small and dark and shaped like a V and proportionate to the skull. The teeth meets like a scissors bite and the tail is set high. The coat comes in multiple colors like light fawn, apricot, tiger or bridle, silver or golden fawn.
The English Mastiff health problems can be hip dysplasia, gastric problems, elbow dysplasia, Varginal hyperplasia, PRA and sometimes cardiomyopathy. As the English Mastiff is known to bloat so they should not be over fed.
The Mastiff adoption is not suitable for people who live in apartments but can be kept if they are given enough of exercise. They are comparatively not very active within the house so need at the least a small yard to play. Mastiffs tend to be lethargic but if it is made to do exercise regularly it will become fit and more contented. So the American Mastiff is required to be taken for walks daily.
The English Mastiff training is sometimes difficult but reciprocate well to gentle and patient training which is done with firmness. The trainer needs to be firm consistent and confident and have natural sense of authority.
Other Mastiff information includes the height of the English Mastiff Dog is about 30 inches and the bitches are 27 inches tall. The weight of the male English Mastiff is 160 pounds while that of the bitches is 150 pounds. The English Mastiff is a bulky breed of dog and a male Mastiff may weigh 200 pounds or more. The longevity of the English Mastiff is about ten to twelve years. They are very big, powerful, well-developed dog and many times also known as the Giant which is very gentle. The Mastiffs puppies are born guard dogs and hardly bark. Apart from this they are confident, smart, composed, imperturbable and docile and vigilant, and very patient with children.
It has a soft, coat which has short hair and which is not difficult to handle. They need to be given bath or shampooed only when very essential. In order to give it a gleaming finish the hair needs to be brushed with a stiff hair brush and wiped with towel. The English Mastiff is known to be an average shedder.
