Papillon : “ The Butterfly Dog”

According to the Papillon history it is one amongst the ancient breeds of dog which goes back to 700 years. This breed was earlier called “Epagneul nain” or the dwarf Spaniel as they had dropped ears. Papillon in French means “butterfly”. There was a time when the  Papillon was also known as the “Squirrel Spaniel” because the tail had long fringes and it curled. The breed became well known because they have often been seen with women of noble background who belonged to France or Spain in the Italian painting during the Renaissance period. The American Kennel Club recognized Papillon  as a breed in 1915

The Papillon characteristics include they are small dogs with fine bones. They have a small head that is a little round. They have black rim in their eyes which is dark, round and medium sized. They have large ears with tips that are rounded and it can be straight or dangling. The Papillon has hairy ears which is elongated and like a fringe. This makes it look like a butterfly. The teeth meet like the   bite of scissors. It has a long tail and which is set high. The Dewclaws need to be removed sometimes. It has just one coat with extra frills on the ears, tails, behind the legs and on the chest. The color of the coat has patches of white with any color apart from liver.
 
Other Papillion information includes it is a sociable, sharp dog that is very sturdy and is very fond of outdoor activities. As it has ears that look like the wings of a butterfly it is many times known as the butterfly dog. The Papillon puppies are very playful, energetic, amusing, animated and delightful little dog. They are also very loving, gentle, tolerant, and pompous and love to be cuddled. They enjoy dancing and playing in the open. They are very good with other animals and pets.

The Papillon training needs to be done by someone who is firm, consistent and confident and who sets rules for the dog to follow and provides limits as to things it is permitted and things it is not permitted  They are easy to train as they are obedient, steady and don’t bark much

The Papillon health problems include problems related to the kneecaps and it can be treated through surgery. The skulls top may have an opening which is same as the “soft spot” which is seen in the human baby’s. They may also suffer from “small dog syndrome”

The Papillon adoption is not much of a hassle as they are easy to groom. They need to be combed and brushed daily and given bath or shampooed only when essential. The teeth need to be cleaned regularly and nails clipped. The hair does not get entangled or matted and they do not shed much hair The height of the male Papillon is about 8 – 11 inches while the weight of the male Papillon is 8-10 pounds and that of the bitches is 7 – 9 pounds. The longevity of the Papillon is about 16 years
