Saint Bernard: “ The Saintly Dog”

According to the Saint Bernard history it came into existence in 980 AD. It was founded by Saint Bernard and the monks crossing four five different breed of dogs. The Hospice used the Saint Bernard through the deceitful pass of Alpine which lies between  the Swiss country and Italy. 

The Saint Bernard characteristics include they are muscular, strong as well as a giant dog. It has a huge head which is very powerful. It has black lips and broad nose with nostrils that are wide and open. It has dark eyes and high set ears which are medium sized and tail that is long and broad. The Saint Bernard has coat of two kinds one which is rough and other smooth. Both the coats come in various combinations and are dense. The Saint Bernard’s are tremendously loving and sociable and very lenient with children. They are also very slow moving, tolerant, exceptionally dedicated, keen, and compliant and always ready to please.  

Other Saint Bernard information includes the dogs has the ability to sense any person buried under several feet of snow.  The Saint Bernard can also foretell storms and avalanches as they have the capability to hear sounds of very low frequency that cannot be heard by humans. The height of the Saint Bernard is about twenty five and half to twenty seven and half inches and it weighs about 110-200 pounds. The number of years a Saint Bernard may live is about eight to ten years. 

The Saint Bernard training is easy as they are extremely intelligent but the training needs to start when they are still small. They need to be taught to socialize with other animals and humans from a very young age.

The Saint Bernard health problems include heart problems, hip dysplasia skin problems, tumors and extropion. They may also have twisted stomachs which needs to be cared for. The Saint Bernard’s are also prone to bloat so they should be given food two three times in small quantity rather than one big meal. They cannot tolerate hot weather and warm rooms and can also wheeze and snore. 

The Saint Bernard adoption can be thought of by people who live in apartments also as they can adjust well to an apartment if adequately exercised. This breed is somewhat not very active within the house so they need a small yard to play. The Saint Bernard though is a family dog but can also live outside the house. They need to be taken for long walks everyday in order to maintain good mental as well as physical health. 

The Saint Bernard puppies should not be made to do too much exercise until their bones become strong and well formed. If the dog is given little walks and short play periods until they are about 2years t is good for them.  

The coat of the Saint Bernard is easy to groom. All it needs is to be brushed and given a bath only when very necessary. A mild soap should be used to protect the coat from losing its oil as well as water resistant properties. The Saint Bernard is known to shed its hair two times a year.
