According to the Bernese Mountain dog history this breed holds its origin to the mountains of Switzerland. There are many paintings of the 18th century which show pictures of dogs which looked exactly like the Bernese. The Bernese was working dogs who were excellent at work related to drafting and pulling of carts. The other work they did were they served as escort for farmers, to take care of the farm and drive the cattle’s etc. Today they are used for tracking, search and rescue operations guarding and carting to name a few.
The Bernese Mountain Dog characteristics include it is a big, strong, well-built, lively dog. The body of the Bernese is a little longer and is not very tall. It has a broad head with a flat top. The teeth meet like the bite of a scissor. The Bernese has medium-sized ears which are triangular and the tips are rounded. The legs are strong and straight and the tail is bushy tail which is carried low. The Bernese have weather-resistant coat which is reasonably long, bulky and a little curly or straight. The Bernese comes in three colors with marking.
Other Bernese Mountain dog information includes they are very cheerful dogs and love children. A Bernese is very self confident and good natured and a life long friend. It loves to be surrounded by people and are not those type of dogs who enjoy being in the kennel or backyard. The height of the male Bernese is 24-28 inches and that of the bitches is about 23-27 inches, while the weight of the male Bernese is about 85 – 110 pounds and the bitches weigh about 80 – 105 pounds.
The Bernese Mountain dog training is easy as they are extremely clever and keen learners and very alert. They are also very sensitive so training should be done firmly yet gently. They should be trained to socialize when they are puppies so that they get along with other pets easily.
The Bernese Mountain Dog health problems include they are is prone to cancer and problem with the eyelid, hip dysplasia as well as and elbow dysplasia etc. They also have the tendency to gains weight very easily so should not be over fed. Apart from that they also are prone to bloating.
Bernese Mountain Dog adoption is not for people who live in apartments as they are not very active in the house and will require at least a big fenced yard to play. As they have a thick coat they are very sensitive to hot weather and would stay well in cold places.
The Bernese Mountain Dog puppies when born can be from 1-14. On an average 8 puppies are born at one time. They are large energetic dogs and require exercise regularly. They also require to be taken for long walks daily. The number of years the Bernese may live is around 6-8 years.
Grooming of the Bernese requires the long and thick coat to be brushed once a week or daily and extra care needs to be taken when the dog is shedding. Shampoo as well as bath should be given only when very essential. The Bernese is known to be seasonal as well as heavy shedders.
